A Message from Steve Murphy for 2012
Friends,
This last month I heard and read the following: a dolphin died to to stress-related causes after being brought to a rave that lasted over 16 hours because someone thought it would be fun to have a dolphin at the party; the Blue Fin Tuna is at this very moment being fished to extinction; the last North American Jaguar is dead, they thrive south of the U.S. border wall; there are only about 3,200 Tigers left in the entire world; the African White Rhino just hit the Extinct Species list; the number of chickens ("poultry isn't meat" I hear all the time!), pigs, and cows butchered every day, every year, year after year, is mind-numbingly in the tens of Billions. And another McDonalds, KFC, and Carls Jr. is built across the street from another urban high school. It's as thou the city and school are in collusion together to fuck over the kids and the eco-system. (oh, and a little know fun factoid! Carl Karcher - owner - was a Grand Dragon in the KKK. Still want to eat at Carls Jr.?); a friend of mine told me about her volunteer experiences at a shelter near her home - she said they adopted out 9 animals that whole weekend. But 13 people came in and surrendered their animals! You wouldn't run a normal business on those kinds of numbers, not for very long..... and it's 2012 now! Happy New Year! the Polar Bear will be extinct in about 12 years.
ENOUGH ALREADY!
What is it going to take to get the rest of the world to care about something other then themselves. The anti-war/anti-oppression/anti-nuke folks say, "we have to take care of the human problem first then we can focus on the other problems." Applying this logic forward by the time we get thru fully correcting the human problems there won't be anymore old growth forests, whales, sharks, tigers, polar bears, jaguars.... and i get very sad when i think i will have to take my grandchildren to the museum someday to show them what whales and dolphins, sharks and sea turtles, polar bears and tigers USED to look like and apologise that they are all gone.
So stay positive. Stay active. Stay out there educating the masses because the other 99% (yeah, I went there) aren't going to do it themselves. They need the flyers and books and speeches and demonstrations to remind them that people, some people, still care about today and tomorrow.
Thank You,
Steve
